Maintaining and regularly updating the content on the visual side of your website is great, keep up the good work. However, what Google sees on the back end is also important.
When was the last time you spoke with your web developer about SEO/Meta-tag updates such as keywords and descriptions? These meta-tags play a large role in how Google indexes and ranks your website and if not done properly or kept up to date can have a significant impact on your search results.
Google is always changing what it is looking for within these tags to encourage you to continuously update them.
For example, it used to be a fairly common practice to use the same description and keywords throughout the whole website, now if you have the same description on even just two different pages, Google will flag it.
In addition to having unique tags for each page, if the content in these meta-tags isn’t relevant to the page it is on, it can also have a negative effect on your search engine results.
For example: If you have a keyword that a potential client is searching for that isn’t within the content on the page, Google might not notice at first. However, if you have users continuously searching for a specific word that you have in your list of keywords, but that word that has nothing to do with the content on that specific page to your website, Google will see that users aren’t finding the answers that they are looking for on your page and lower your search ranking. The same goes for your page descriptions if it is inconsistent with the information that page provides Google will notice.
