Live Stream – What is it? Is it important? How does it work? We can help!
Over the last few weeks we’ve had many discussions with clients regarding live streaming of video. The top four questions have been:
- What is it?
- Why is it important?
- How does it work?
- Can Grey Goose Graphics help?
We thought we’d share the answers…
What is it?
Live streaming refers to online streaming media (video and/or audio) over the web in real time to the viewer. It is often simply referred to as streaming
In the past distribution of video of an event, announcement, etc. would require a television station to capture the moment and transmit it using their network. Today, streaming allows for the capture of an event and transmission across the web.
The use of streaming can be used for a wide variety of topics such as social media, education, advertising/promotion, information dissemination/media events, etc.
There are many different platforms capable of streaming today and the list is growing daily. A few of the most common streaming sites include: Facebook Live, YouTube Live, WebEx, Zoom and GoToMeeting.
Why is it important?
Despite the relative infancy of live streaming video, its rate of user adoption and participation from major social media and marketing giants is driving the urgency to include this in marketing and advertising strategies now.
The growth and acceptance of this technology is also expanding its use for the broadcasting of media events, special announcements, seminars, conferences, etc.
How Does it work?
While each platform has its own idiosyncrasies, the basic concept is the same. Digital media (audio and/or video), an application or platform for distribution and an internet connection is all that is required to stream.
With that said, there are many other technology and production considerations based on specific project or individual needs. Some are able to simply use an iphone and Facebook Live and it meets their needs… Others require security and restriction of their stream to a specific audience, or a professional production quality utilizing specialized lighting, cameras, audio mixing, or embedding slides, previously recorded video, etc.
The more complex, the more technology and expertise is required for a stream.
